2000 was the year of the Sydney
Olympics and Euro 2000. The world of golf was dominated by Tiger Woods'
three grand slam wins, while the New York Yankees retained baseball's
World Series. After the inception of the World Club Championships in Brazil, Real
Madrid went on to win the European Cup, while Manchester United
maintained their dominance of the English game.
A resurgent England cricket team
beat the West Indies, but Wimbledon success eluded the British, with yet
another title for Pete Sampras. A picture of things to come emerged with Marat
Safin's US Open win. The women's game saw the continued rise of the Williams
sisters - and Anna Kournikova still failed to win a tournament.
Shaq and Kobe saw the LA
Lakers rule the NBA, while America's greatest sporting hero was Lance
Armstrong, winning his second Tour de France. Even faster wheels, and Michael
Schumacher's driving, helped Ferrari to Grand Prix glory.
