The highlight of the 2003 sporting year was
England's momentous victory in the Rugby Union World Cup Final Down
Under. Jonny Wilkinson's drop goal in extra time stunned the Hosts, Australia as
England snatched the Webb Ellis Trophy at the Telstra Stadium in Sydney. The
final score was 20-17. Also in 2003, Real Madrid
strengthened their star-studded team with world football's most-talked about player,
David Beckham. Beckham reluctantly left his boyhood club, Manchester
United, to join the mighty Galacticos in June. Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo,
Roberto Carlos and Beckham are gelling well so expect a major push in 2004 to
regain their Champions League crown.
However, Real were nowhere to be found at the 2003
Champions League Final at Manchester's 'Theatre of Dreams', Old Trafford in
May - it was an all-Italian affair with Juventus taking on Milan.
Milan were
the eventual winners after extra-time and a penalty shoot-out.
