This month sees the climax of the
flat Horse Racing season. In Europe on the 2nd of October, Longchamp near Paris hosts the celebrated Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
Two other top class races are billed for the same raceday at Longchamp:
the Prix de l'Abbeye and the Prix Marcel Boussac.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, the Breeders' Cup - widely acknowledged as the World Championship
of Racing - comes from New York's Belmont Park on
Saturday, October 29th. The eight spectacular Grade I races include: Breeders'
Cup Distaff, Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Breeders' Cup Mile,
Breeders' Cup Sprint, Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Breeders' Cup Turf,
Breeders' Cup Classic.
World Cup
2006 Qualifiers are the highlight of the Soccer calendar in
October. Teams in the European & North American/Central American and
Caribbean Zones compete on October 8th (Saturday) and 12th (Wednesday),
while teams in the African and South American Zones play their games on
the 7th and 8th and 11th, respectively.
For Formula 1 Motor Racing fans,
the season draws to a close in October with the Japanese
Grand Prix (Suzuka) on the 9th and the Chinese Grand Prix
(Shanghai) on the 16th.
The MLB regular season ends on 2
October and the Boston Red Sox will hope to feature
again in the MLB World Series (starts on October 22nd), while a sure sign of oncoming
winter is the beginning of the NHL Ice Hockey season.
In Athletics, the 14th IAAF World
Half Marathon Championships take place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on the
1st, while in Darts world, players step up to the oche at
the Winmau World Masters event in Bridlington, Yorkshire, England
from the 21st to the 23rd.
